Thailand’s Dhurakij Pundit University (DPU) has held Demo Day, a showcase of student blockchain projects, at True Digital Park in Bangkok. The students were part of the first class to complete the university’s newly initiated “Geeks on the Block(chain)” course, which ran from June to July 2019. The course was organized with the aim of promoting blockchain technology as a driver of the nation’s economy.
At Demo Day, a total of five blockchain projects were highlighted: CannaBlock, which uses blockchain to track cannabis from plant to product; Gross Domestic Happiness, a project to measure the happiness of citizens on a blockchain platform; Real Time Democracy, an exploration of democratic expression; Social Scoring, an experiment that grants scores for good deeds; and TRAFFIX, which manages traffic issues with blockchain.
Panachit Kittipanya-ngam, Director of DPU X, the university’s institute for developing entrepreneurship and workforces of the future, touted the benefits of blockchain on Thai society.
“From now on, blockchain will make a difference in our society, creating more trust among consumers, and positively affecting the country’s economy in the long-term,” said Panachit.
Bhume Bhumiratana, a consultant with the Thai Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and one of the program’s instructors, revealed that distributed ledger technology is seeing more adoption and bringing more transparency and ease to services such as money transfers. Therefore, he explained, the course was created to meet the growing demand for blockchain developers.
“Geeks on the Block(chain) was held to develop personnel for the digital industry in Thailand, especially for blockchain developers to understand the structure and coding of the technology in order to utilize blockchain for real use cases,” Bhume said.
