Maejo University based in Chiang Mai, Thailand organized a seminar entitled, “Blockchain in Food and Agriculture” on June 21st, 2019. Maejo University is considered one of the oldest agricultural institutions in the largely agrarian Southeast Asian nation.
Event organizers at Maejo University revealed that the seminar was held to disseminate information, exchange perspectives, and create networks that will promote new projects related to blockchain implementation in the agricultural sector.
As agriculture is one of Thailand’s leading industries, blockchain can be applied to improve processes relating to production, logistics, and verification of origin for commodities such as rice, fruit, vegetables, and seafood to great effect. Moreover, blockchain technology can lend greater credibility to farmers, as the modern food industry focuses more on how and where food is grown and processed.
Topics and speakers at the event included, “Introduction to Blockchain Technology” by Nonthawit Duangsodsri, software developer and co-founder of The Existing Company; “Agricultural Blockchain Platforms for Knowledge Exchange” by Asst. Prof. Dr. Nirote Sinnarong from the Faculty of Economics at Maejo University; “IBM Blockchain for Organizations” by Petchpaitoon Krungwong, digital transform adviser for IBM Thailand; and “Blockchain Innovation for Agriculture” and “Developing Blockchain Projects for Agriculture” by Asst. Prof. Dr. Siriwat Sakonwasi from the Faculty of Agricultural Production at Maejo University.
The seminar has been touted as a success, with agricultural experts, researchers, and university students joining in to share their thoughts and discuss ways to develop the country’s agricultural sector with blockchain technology.
