Vietnam-based TE-FOOD recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on cooperation with the Department of Livestock and Fisheries under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Laos to develop a herd management and information system to urgently prevent epidemics using smartphones. The move comes amid an epidemic of African swine fever that has been spreading across Asia.

As reported by VietnamPlus, the system aims to assist breeding farmers in providing data on the scale of specific herds and epidemic situations to relevant management agencies.  The information will also help agencies swiftly carry out accurate response measures to prevent the spread of viruses, while supporting the development of production plans.

TE-FOOD will provide US$200,000 in non-refundable aid to the project over the course of five years, the first of which will see it cover pig farms and expand to other livestock farms throughout the country in the second year.

Da Ha Trung, CEO of TE-Food, addressed the signing ceremony by saying the system will enable Laos to better control diseases, while also improving efficiency and transparency of the food supply chain.

He added that the company has collaborated with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam, and various Vietnamese localities to deploy blockchain technology in managing farms, diseases and the origin of produce.

Additionally, the system will help producers meet regulatory standards of importing countries, as well as support the development and promotion of trademarks while minimizing the threat of epidemics and unsafe food. This will in turn boost confidence among consumers.
