Taiwan’s BlockChain Security Inc has launched Blockchain Witness, a blockchain-based app developed for storing digital data to be used as evidence in legal proceedings, according to the company’s CEO Po Huang.
“Blockchain technology can preserve digital data to make them non-repudiable and tamper-proof, and matched with digital fingerprinting technology it can ensure the authenticity and validity of evidence,” Huang said.
The Digitimes reported that the app enables users to take photographs, record voice or videos, and upload them on blockchain so that the data cannot be tampered.
“While we use more and more digital data as evidence in lawsuits or to protect ourselves in negotiations or handling a car accident, the other party often doubts whether the data is authentic, as people can easily falsify a screenshot, picture and even a voice record,” Huang added.
Among the core distinctions of blockchain technology is that no one can alter the data once it is uploaded onto the chains. Huang noted that data uploaded through the app would be stronger evidence in lawsuits over insults made on Facebook or the Line messaging app.
Blockchain Witness reportedly uses GPS to automatically track the time and location of digital files that get uploaded.
In September last year, China’s Supreme Court ruled that evidence authenticated via blockchain could be regarded as binding in legal disputes, declaring that internet courts shall recognize digital data submitted as evidence if relevant parties collect and store the data using blockchain “with digital signatures, reliable timestamps and hash value verification or via a digital deposition platform, and can prove the authenticity of such technology used.”
