A South Korean blockchain consortium has announced it will launch a blockchain-powered mobile application that offers identification and certification services so users can safely handle their digital identity.

The Initial DID Association said that once the Initial mobile app is launched next year, users can control their personal information without centralized registries or certificate authorities.

Around 70 Digital Certifications Available for Download

The app will allow users to easily download upload, and share certificates, leveraging blockchain technology to protect the authenticity of the certificates as well as users’ personal information.

According to the consortium, around 70 digital certifications will be available for download on Initial next year.

The app will also allow users “to select the certificate you want by connecting to the organization you want to issue and submit from the mobile electronic certification app,” Tokenpost.com reported. “It will also be equipped with the ability to issue and submit desired certificates using QR codes in each institution’s web service.”

Blockchain-Based Service by Tech, Financial Leaders

The Initial DID Association was formed in October by Samsung Electronics, LG Uplus, KOSCOM, SK Telecom, KT, KEB Hana Bank and Woori Bank, with Hyundai Card, Shinhan Bank, BC Card and NH Nonghyup later joining the consortium.

Fxstreet.com reported that Initial, backed by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA), will be first used for certificates from six South Korean universities and for English test scores. The app will later be used for submitting loan application documents such as income tax withholding and loan certificates.
