Ngee Ann Polytechnic, in collaboration with social enterprise Mums@Work, is offering job skills courses to mothers looking to re-enter the corporate world. All 35 courses focus on digital skills, including in blockchain technology and artificial intelligence.
According to the agreement signed between Ngee Ann Polytechnic and Mums@Work, a total of 35 courses will be available starting this month.
The program includes 15 short courses covering areas such as professional image makeover, digital portfolio creation, home enterprise, blockchain, digital marketing, smart contracts, AI, and robotics. The remaining 20 courses are suitable for mothers who already possess professional experience and are looking to brush up on specific fields such as landscaping and healthcare.
One of the short courses on digital marketing and branding also guarantees a job interview with companies that are partners of Ngee Ann Polytechnic. More than half of the participants in previous classes have gone on to receive employment by industry partners.
In 2017, Mums@Work polled 40,000 mothers in a survey on challenges faced by mothers returning to work. Factors included fear of the changing work environment, age, lack of confidence, as well as gaps in tech skills. More than 80% of respondents had almost 10 years of work experience in major industries.
Ms. Christy Chung, Director of Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s Continuing Education and Training Academy, said she is grateful for the collaboration between the institute and Mums@Work.
“As a mother of five, I had been away from work for extended periods five times over. I can fully understand that the days leading up to returning to work may be daunting,” said Chung.
“Whether (the mums) are re-starting, re-anchoring or re-discovering their careers, there is an itinerary for each of them.”
