Smartphones at lower price points released by Samsung, South Korea’s leading consumer electronics manufacturer, are set to feature functions to support blockchain and cryptocurrency applications which were previously only offered in more expensive models.

Citing local business news outlet Business Korea, Cointelegraph reported that the crypto– and blockchain-related functions provided in the Samsung S10 model will be installed in Galaxy smartphones.

Samsung also announced that it is collaborating with other telecommunications firms to develop a blockchain platform that will work with local currencies and identification cards.

Chae Won-Cheol, Senior Managing Director of the product strategy team at Samsung Electronics’ Wireless Business Division, said, “We will lower barriers to new experiences by gradually expanding the number of Galaxy models that support blockchain functions. We will also expand our service target countries after Korea, the United States and Canada.”

Previously, Cointelegraph reported that the new Galaxy S10 series smartphones manufactured by Samsung will offer wallet functions for Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), and two other tokens.

Earlier this year, the crypto news outlet cited an anonymous source as saying that the South Korean electronics giant may be carrying out a project to develop and issue its own token on a public-private blockchain platform.

Another mobile phone manufacturer, Taiwan’s HTC, also revealed that it is set to launch a budget blockchain-enabled smartphone in the third quarter of 2019. The new handset follows up on its earlier blockchain smartphone, the HTC Exodus, and will feature a full BTC node and in-wallet ERC-20 token swaps.
