The Ministry of Science and ICT of South Korea has given the green light to a digital driver’s license app powered by blockchain. Set to be launched in early 2020, the digital ID solution is a collaboration between South Korean major mobile carriers and the police force.
Major Korean mobile service provider SK Telecom plans to develop several blockchain-related services, including a mobile app that stores digital driver’s licenses, according to Business Korea.
Earlier in May, SK Telecom, KT, and LG U+ reportedly sought official approval to operate a mobile driver’s license service called PASS, which will be combined with a decentralized identifier (DID) based on blockchain technology.
After a driver’s license is scanned with the app, the information is uploaded to a blockchain platform on police servers and a QR code will be created. The QR code allows police officers to view the digital license on their handsets.
On September 26th, the ministry announced its approval to test the digital license solution in a regulatory sandbox. Also approved by the South Korean police, the test has been conducted by all three mobile carriers.
In the announcement, the ministry said the blockchain-powered digital ID service will help “reduce costs and prevent crimes caused by the loss and theft of ID cards.”
Digital driver’s licenses are expected to be officially available in early 2020. The government also revealed that the licenses will be accepted by stores and cinemas as proof of age.
