Although blockchain is most commonly known for its commercial applications, dissidents of North Korea have found another use for the distributed ledger technology in the form of offering visas to the secretive state.

The group known as Cheollima Civil Defence (CCD) and its website has been advertising the “limited issuance” of 200,000 anonymous blockchain visas to visit North Korea, particularly following what it sees as an inevitable “liberation” of the country. Pyongyang has allegedly been storing millions in Bitcoin under the directions of leader Kim Jong Un.

CCD said visas are being issued on the Ethereum blockchain in the form of non-fungible, non-interchangeable ERC-721 tokens called G-VISA. The current price for the first 1,000 visas is one Ether token.

The dissident group will start issuing the visas on March 24, 2019, with each visa bearing an incremental identification number reflecting the order of issuance. Each visa will also entitle its holder to visit North Korea for up to 45 days, valid until 2029. Buyers can also purchase multiple visas for repeat trips.

The CCD has made clear, however, that the visas are for visiting a future “Free Joseon,” and are not to intended for any other purpose, such as visiting the current state of North Korea governed under the Kim regime.

The group’s website states that ownership of one or more G-VISAS should be considered “a contribution to the movement,” adding that the visas should not be used for speculative or fiduciary purposes.

Aside from the CDD, the site recommends other ERC-721 marketplaces that are likely to have preferred issuance IDs.
