Myanmar Tech Accelerator Hosts Country’s First Roundtable on Blockchain

Asia Blockchain Review
July 10, 2019

Phandeeyar, a technology seed accelerator based in Yangon, recently hosted Myanmar’s first roundtable discussion on blockchain technology.

The Myanmar Times reported that Htun Khaing Lynn, Phandeeyar’s tech community manager, described the event as “an excellent way to broaden awareness of blockchain technology in Myanmar,” adding that it would also serve to attract interest for Phandeeyar’s Startup Challenge.

Blockchain as an “Ethical Backbone” for Emerging Tech

The advantages of blockchain technology was discussed by the first panelist, Theodor Beutel, a governance specialist at GIZ Blockchain Lab who said blockchain could become an “ethical backbone” for emerging technology.

Beutel also noted that central banks around the world have been grappling with regulatory issues as cryptocurrencies become serious competitors to local currencies.

He further cited their convenience and transparency for users as possibly driving central banks to begin developing their own digital assets to compete with crypto heavyweights such as Bitcoin, Litecoin and Ethereum.

Land Registries and Additional Relevant Applications

Another panelist, Claudi Sosa Lazo – senior product owner at Wave Money – discussed her experiences with creating blockchain-based land registries to assist governments, individuals and firms to better record, manage and store data on property transactions.

The second half of the roundtable was led by Thet Naing Soe, chief technology officer at Arena Blockchain Inc; Bo Bo Zin, head of technology transformation at Yoma Bank; and Aung Ko Ko Thet, program leader and lecturer at Auston College.

Thet Naing Soe then concluded the discussion by bringing the audience back to the basics of blockchain technology, attracting a number of programmers and computer enthusiasts interested in the applications as they related to Startup Challenge 2019.
