Marseille Fos Port Authority has successfully carried out a blockchain test to develop solutions that will improve freight systems in the Mediterranean-Rhone-Saone (MeRS) corridor and allow logistics operations to be conducted with enhanced efficiency.

Ensuring Competitiveness for Key Freight Area

According to the Medi Telegraph, the pilot project was commissioned by Marseille Fos and carried out by multiple service providers from blockchain solutions provider KeeeX, cargo tracking specialist Marseille Gyptis International (MGI) and collaborative platform developer BuyCo.

The port authority disclosed that the experiment demonstrated how the new system was able to digitize the transport chain, while enhancing fluidity, reliability and competitiveness for the MeRS corridor.

Enhancing Logistics with Blockchain Technology

Blockchain technology played a huge role in the trial, as KeeeX provided a decentralized solution which allowed manufacturing companies to participate in the experiment by providing data on the suppliers for their river and road transportation.

With blockchain, stakeholders were able to share data — from cargo tracking and destination of containers to loading and discharge details — in a secure manner.

The blockchain trial was overseen by an inter-ministry MeRS development body and was a crucial part of France’s national port strategy as well as the French Smart Port in Med initiative.

Funding for the project was provided by Marseille Fos Port Authority and La Banque des Territoires, which is part of the investment institution Caisse des Depots, together with waterway-governing agencies Voies Navigables de France and La Compagnie Nationale du Rhone.
