As a decentralized ledger technology (DLT), blockchain has numerous applications, including those related to the tourism industry. With blockchain, Malaysia’s Melaka Straits City will be able to track tourist visas, passengers, luggage, and all kinds of booking services in real-time.

According to a report from Yahoo! Finance, Melaka Straits City is a tourist blockchain city funded by the Chinese government. Situated off the coast of Malacca in Malaysia, the new city is being constructed with an administrative infrastructure supported by blockchain technology.

Developers confirmed that Melaka Straits City will be built with the aim of serving as a tourist destination with sustainable development and they are preparing to build boutique hotels and villas along the coastline. The Ministry of Tourism of China forecasts three million tourist arrivals every year.

The city is also being positioned as an education hub, with 32 hectares devoted to kindergartens, colleges, universities, and student dormitories. Melaka Straits City will be promoted as a regional education center, with four campuses set to become integral elements of the smart city.

Lim Keng Kai, a representative of the new blockchain-based tourism and education hub, said, “The process of construction and subsequent development of Melaka Straits City will be carried out based on the blockchain technology. Technological innovations will be focused on the improvement of the fundamental infrastructure and integrated with the city statistics.”

Moreover, the city will be using its own token, the DMI coin. Tourists visiting Melaka Straits will exchange their money into digital currencies that can be used to pay for services in the city via their mobile phones.
