Malaysian Tech University Signs Blockchain Research MoU

May 8, 2019

University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS), located in Sibu, Sarawak, Malaysia, has advanced its efforts in pioneering new digital technology with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with NEM Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., a subsidiary of NEM Foundation.

According to UCTS Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Datuk Khairuddin Abdul Hamid, the MoU seeks to develop and coordinate collaborative research, as well as educational and training projects mostly involving blockchain technology.

Under the current trend of automation and data exchange, known collectively as Industry 4.0, a kaleidoscope of technological breakthroughs is taking center stage, including artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, cyber-security, Internet of Things (IoT), and of course, blockchain technology.

As reported by the Borneo Post, the vice-chancellor said blockchain would allow for the distribution of data over a network while remaining secure, adding that the MoU would provide students with the latest technology for the purposes of teaching, learning, and final-year projects.

He added that the second aim of the MoU is for UCTS to review its current curriculum and syllabus to facilitate the university’s adoption of blockchain technology.

The third objective is to work with the state government in promoting and help guide its implementation of blockchain.

Prof. Dr. Khairuddin also noted that NEM Malaysia specializes solely in blockchain, adding that the university hoped to have an open lab allowing students to gain hands-on experience with blockchain in the next stage.
