The Klaytn Virtual Hackathon is now in full swing, with the competition open to participants worldwide until May 31st. The hackathon is being organized by Ground X, the blockchain subsidiary of leading South Korean mobile platform Kakao.

The event is an opportunity for participants worldwide to create BApps (Blockchain Applications) using the Klaytn public testnet Baobab, which was launched on March 29th.

To kickstart the competition, Klaytn held its first hackathon meetup on April 25th in Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City with talks given by industry leaders, including Ground X Director Jerome Jonggun Lee and Senior Manager Ki Jun Sung, Senior Director of Topica Edtech Group Bobby Liu, and Co-founder of Coder School Charles Lee.

According to the Ground X Director, Kakao’s global public blockchain project Klaytn is an enterprise-grade, service-centric platform that combines the best features of both public and private blockchains via an efficient ‘hybrid’ design that aims to provide the best experience to developers and users.

“Blockchain Applications (BApps) are first-class citizens in Klaytn’s world,” Lee said. “We strive to offer the highest performance and the most productive environment that caters to a wide spectrum of engineering audience, from micro startups to enterprise divisions.”

Senior Manager Sung invited all developers to take part in the hackathon, which offers first and second place winners US$7,000 and US$5,000 worth of KLAY tokens, respectively, as well as the opportunity to attend TXGX, the technology-oriented forum organized by Ground X, which will take place in Seoul in July.

Influencers in the blockchain industry also joined the HCMC meetup to discuss blockchain use cases, with Head of Asia Blockchain Review (ABR) Nicole Nguyen moderating the panel session.

Coder School’s Charles Lee revealed that blockchain technology can be used in many aspects across the education sector, such as allowing universities to accredit diplomas and ensuring that all academic records are verifiable within the blockchain.

The panel also discussed the use of blockchain in the agricultural sector. According to the speakers, the decentralized ledger technology can serve the needs of farmers for a transparent, trusted, and reliable source of information that can connect them directly to the market, banks, and consumers, without relying on profiteering middlemen.

However, the panelists cautioned that blockchain mass adoption may still be some time away. The industry still lacks an actual application for end users to experience and explore blockchain, in the way that Instagram, for example, provides a tangible social media experience.
