Mark Karpeles, the former CEO of the now-defunct Bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox, is initiating a new project with his Japan-registered blockchain firm Tristan Technologies Co., where he serves as Chief Technology Officer (CTO), according to Japanese news outlet The Mainichi.
Described as a computer prodigy and Japanophile, Karpeles expressed his desire to see Japan reclaim its position as a global tech leader through blockchain, after having been outdone by US tech behemoths such as Apple, Amazon, and Facebook for years.
“Japan used to be engineering superpower in terms of its PCs but right now, taking the cloud, for example, it’s the U.S. that dominates,” Karpeles told reporters at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan, as reported by The Mainichi. “But I still believe in the potential Japan has and I would like to develop that.”
His new Japan-registered startup aims to establish a secure and faster operating system compared to other platforms currently in use. According to CTO Karpeles, Tristan Technologies places emphasis on cloud-based IT solutions such as AtOnline Drive, a cloud storage solution a la Dropbox.
His now-defunct Bitcoin exchange, Mt. Gox, had in early 2014 suffered a massive hack involving 850,000 BTC, of which partial amounts were later recovered. The exchange officially filed for liquidation in April of that year.
The 34-year-old Frenchman was arrested and spent 11 months in Japanese detention after his crypto exchange suffered from a major hack and subsequent collapse in 2015. While he was cleared of fraud and embezzlement charges last March, he is still currently appealing one conviction for tampering with records.
