Kopitiam, a food court operator for Singaporean shopping malls, has revealed that it recently developed a platform which will allow customers to make payments in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin.
According to Blockonomi, Kopitiam is currently accepting payments in Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH), as its self-serving stations at food courts have been connected to a digital payment system that also accepts crypto.
This platform, called KOPItech, lets customers pay with crypto for meal orders on the system. Kopitiam chief Alden Tan disclosed that more than S$370,000 has been invested in upgrading the KOPItech platform.
“Allowing cryptocurrencies will help us to learn more about this segment of the payment system. This group of customers may grow in the future, so this is what we want to attract. We are always mindful of how we could add more customers to the food court,” said Tan.
Tan noted that the company took three years to plan and develop the project, as Kopitiam seeks to leverage the increasing popularity of cryptocurrencies in order to attract more customers to its services.
The chain’s new system is part of the company’s efforts to stand out from competitors in the food and beverage business, and to cater to the changing behaviors of customers.
“We wanted to do something different and ride on the trend of technology […] From the data analysis, we will be able to think of something that can serve them more, be it offering food delivery, or expanding on some payment mode that I think will bring more customers to the outlet,” said Tan.
