Unblock Bangkok this month is decoding the mysterious Libra, a new cryptocurrency being developed by Facebook that focuses on financial services and seeks to create a stablecoin to facilitate ordinary consumer transactions online. Libra is first and foremost a cryptocurrency created to let people access and participate in the Libra Network. Users will be able to exchange fiat currency into this digital currency for online transactions. 

While decentralization is the key philosophy behind a cryptocurrency on blockchain, Libra is not decentralized. Facebook’s digital coin will be backed by a basket of real-world currencies and co-managed by Facebook’s newly-minted financial services division Calibra along with 100 partner firms including payment giants Visa, MasterCard, and PayPal as well as taxi-hailing services Lyft and Uber.

In this meetup, we will explain the key fundamental elements of cryptocurrency and provide an introduction to the Libra coin.
