A South Korean game studio is set to release a decentralized game in which players can contribute to its development.
According to Nederob, Planetarium designed the role-playing game Nine Chronicles to allow users to add their own content using blockchain technology.
Slated for a launch around the end of this year, Nine Chronicles will be distinct from other interactive adventures by inviting user generated content. Press material for the game calls it a “fully decentralized RPG powered by the players,” while Kijun Seo, CEO of Planetarium, stated:
“From the start, we were committed to creating great game that’s also a true development platform rather than a license to tweak. Nine Chronicles opens its entire mechanism to developers. It’s a real playground for modders.”
The game is built on Planetarium’s own Libplanet blockchain, which in turn is integrated with Unity and was designed to be entirely open-source. According to the studio, gamers with a basic knowledge of programming and blockchain technology will be able to influence the game’s development.
In the open-world platform of Nine Chronicles, players will be presented with a side scrolling action experience spanning nine worlds. Within the worlds, players will battle enemies, mine resources to generate in-game currency, trade using currency and resources, craft items and dictate the makeup and progression of the game overall.
The blockchain aspect of the game and the resources provided within will afford gamers a high level of freedom and choice, including on how the game will evolve over time.
