China Mobile HK and ASTRI Partner to Introduce Blockchain-IoT Technology

Asia Blockchain Review
July 9, 2019

China Mobile Hong Kong (CMHK) has collaborated with Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) to introduce the city’s first application of blockchain-powered Internet of Things (IoT) technology.

As reported by PR Newswire, China Mobile Group’s OneNEET IoT platform and ASTRI’s blockchain solution form a combined application that was demonstrated for the first time during Mobile World Congress (MWC) Shanghai 2019 from June 26-28.

Blockchain Makes IoT Secure, Traceable and Cost-effective

The power of blockchain technology was applied for the first time ever to an IoT application that collects and stores data in real-time, thereby making it more secure as well as traceable and verifiable. Conventional methods involve a centralized system of IoT data collection and storage that does not utilize any form of encryption, leaving it more vulnerable to attack or tampering.

Through the use of distributed data storing, blockchain encryption safeguards information and its traceable features ensure that data remains safe and stable. Combined, blockchain and IoT technology address supervision issues while also reducing the cost of operations and facilitating a wide range of applications.

The hope is that the application will help advance the development of Smart cities.

CMHK and ASTRI Aim to Advance Smart City Development

At MWC Shanghai 2019, CMHK and ASTRI were invited to showcase how simulated data is collected from vehicles, smart lampposts and parking lots, before being transferred to China Mobile Group’s OneNET’s equipment management and applied development open source platform.

The two firms plan to continue their partnership into new areas to further facilitate Smart city applications, while promoting the development of Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area as a world-class center for scientific and technological excellence.
