Chinese search engine giant Baidu has launched a pilot in Chongqing of its medical data sharing and distribution solution powered by its blockchain platform XuperChain.
According to a report by Ledger Insights, the largest search engine in China will use its open-source technology to overcome inefficiencies in how medical data is communicated and analyzed, reducing any dangers to patients as well as administrative costs.
Baidu created its solution to address issues plaguing health care, including limited access to patient information by doctors resulting in misdiagnosis, the leakage of patient records leading to privacy violations, and the high cost of data sharing as well as dealing with insurance claims.
Baidu’s XuperChain-based technology is to securely store health records from doctor assessments to prescriptions in a single database. At the onset, the focus will be on e-prescriptions, improving communication between hospitals and pharmacies.
Beyond distributing information on what drugs patients are to receive, the system is to also track when patients pick up their prescriptions and collect further data.
The launch of the tech is currently limited to Yuzhong District of Chongqing under a government partnership. If proven effective among its population of 30 million, the system is to be rolled out across China and will allow Baidu to tap into an industry projected to rise to US$1.4 trillion in value as soon as next year.
Baidu’s blockchain platform was created and is handled by official partners that include the Beijing and Guangzhou Internet Courts, China’s Copyright Bureau, and its Arbitration Commission. The node hosts have helped to lend credibility to the XuperChain platform in China.
