In Japan, 100 manufacturers are participating in a program to share their production data among industry peers, relying on blockchain technology to ensure the security of sensitive information.
Ensuring Data Security for Manufacturers with Blockchain
According to the Nikkei Asian Review, machine tool maker DMG Mori, electrical appliances producer Mitsubishi Electric, and servos and motion controllers manufacturer Yaskawa Electric are just a few of the major Japanese corporations that have agreed to exchange their production data and practices to increase the competitiveness of the entire industry.
Manufacturers have traditionally treated production data as corporate secrets that are key to their competitiveness in the market. In spite of this, major manufacturers have initiated this information exchange program in a bid to increase production efficiency and boost the overall competitiveness of Japan’s industries.
The program is scheduled to start in early 2020 with the oversight of the Industrial Value Chain Initiative, a manufacturers’ group which has been promoting the Internet of Things in Japan.
The data will be gathered on a blockchain-enabled platform to minimize the risk of data leaks, while reducing operating costs for the project.
Data Sharing to Pool Japanese Manufacturing Know-How
Under the program, companies will share information, including data related to product design, quality control, and the status of production equipment, to name a few.
With more data, stakeholders such as parts suppliers will benefit from their collective knowledge of equipment and tools usage. For example, if machine tool makers share equipment usage data, clients may better understand how quickly parts wear out and take measures to maintain equipment with greater efficiency.
