Malaysia’s Agricultural Minister Salahuddin Ayub recently announced that the administration is planning to use blockchain technology to track agricultural products, in a bid to enhance reliability and control over products in the sector, especially with the rapid growth of Halal exports.
In 2017, exports of Halal products and services from Malaysia totalled about US$10 billion, with potential to grow in the coming years. Blockchain technology, which uses a decentralized ledger, is expected to tackle problems related to speed and security in the tracking system. Distributed ledger technology (DLT) ensures that the data in the system cannot be altered retrospectively, thus reinforcing trust in the origin and journey of agricultural and Halal products.
The Minister explained that should an outbreak or contamination occur in the agricultural sector, the DLT would help track down the origin of the product, as the technology allows food and agricultural products to be traced from the affected consumer all the way back to the laboratory or farm.
Malaysia hopes that with a higher level of transparency, more producers will be aware of the importance of the tracking system, leading to overall better quality of products and services in the country’s agriculture industry.
With the use of blockchain-based platform, end consumers will be able to use mobile applications to scan product labels to check the location and time that the food was produced, as well as its journey to supermarkets and stores.
