February 17, 2020

Leading on from the initiatives back in 2019 which amounted to up 73 in total, this year’s benchmark has risen to 130, which is quite an extraordinary leap. YB Yeo Bee Yin, the MESTECC Minister was on hand to launch the initiatives with great fanfare. The overarching theme of “Own it. Do It. Ace It.” has been deemed as a relevant motto given the MESTECC’s responsibility towards its effective approach of bringing the best of its services to the masses at large. The agency’s initiatives for 2020 will be carried out in five categories, namely the energy sector, science and innovation, climate change and environment, international strategic planning and the management sector. All of these initiatives are about the vision of shared prosperity and also about increasing the overall competitiveness of the country. These initiatives are designed to have a maximum impact towards all the facets that come under the purview of MESTECC.

A Holistic Vision Is Well Underway

YB Yeo Bee Yin also officiated a system for the management and monitoring of MESTECC related initiatives through ‘i-ALERTS’ which encompasses ‘Intelligent-Analysis’ and ‘Evaluation and Real Time Solutions’. The system is designed to manage, monitor and measure the performance of benchmarks of the 130 initiatives that are within the MESTECC 2020 plan. This mobile-friendly system is all about ensuring these initiatives are properly managed, monitored and measured for maximum efficacy and success. In the energy sector for example, there are 32 initiatives that are focused on strengthening the electrical supply industry in all states nationwide, a 20% target for renewable energy sources by 2025 and an 8% savings target from energy efficiency methods that will permeate the private and public sectors.

Science And Technology Gets A Boost

There are 31 initiatives that are mainly linked to the advancement of science and technology, specifically in the R&D areas. There will be amendments to some laws and some restructuring of the National Science Council and such. There will be an increased mandate for social innovation, I-Connect and even the development of satellite technology for more advanced use. Apart from Researcher-Industry Scientific Exchange (R.I.S.E 2.0) initiatives, MESTECC is also heading to schools for outreach programs on STEM-related programs. As far as climate change goes, there are 40 initiatives that are mainly focused on the strengthening of the overall framework and enforcement of the agencies under the purview of MESTECC.

Going Green In A Big Way

‘Green Financing’ and various green technology incentives also get a major boost with international collaboration through various programs. The ministry will be widening the scope of the Malaysian Green Technology Corporation (MGTC) and renaming it to Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Centre (MGCC). A committee to look into climate change will also be established and its first order of business will be a nationwide plan to adapt towards climate change. All in all, MESTECC is ramping up its international collaboration efforts, specifically towards China, Japan, US and Russia as well. The ministry is relentless towards strategically managing its aspirational objectives as it aims to transcend expectations and trailblaze a better future for all Malaysians.
