The Muroran Institute of Technology in Hokkaido and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone West have announced that a blockchain-based service to verify educational records will be launched next year. Blockchain’s tamper-proof record-keeping can prevent fake educational certificates, as well as other official records.
Blockchain’s capabilities can greatly improve the verification of educational documents such as university diplomas, certificates, and transcripts. The technology can ensure trustworthiness for employers by preventing interference or tampering by unauthorized entities.
The regional unit of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone launched the service to notarize degrees for university students and alumni at convenience stores. The company plans to develop a new blockchain-powered project in collaboration with Sapporo-based system developer BarnardSoft.
Muroran Institute will be the first in Japan to offer blockchain-based verification, with plans to expand the service to about five universities starting next year.
Keeping track of academic records is more difficult today, due to universities merging and more people returning to school. Muroran Institute professor Junichi Kishigami said, “We hope to eventually have a system that also tracks job histories and qualifications, so each person can easily prove their records.”
Other countries where blockchain is being used to verify educational records include the U.S., Malaysia, Switzerland, and Bahrain. In the U.S., the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) offers a similar blockchain-based educational verification system.
The Malaysian Ministry of Education recently announced that it is developing a service to authenticate diplomas. The service uses E-Skrol, a program based on the NEM blockchain.
