Vietnam and Japan Cooperate on Information Security Initiative

Vietnam’s Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) recently convened the first meeting of its joint coordination committee to tackle information security issues.

According to a report by Open Gov Asia, the meeting was attended by the Deputy Chief Representative of JICA Vietnam Office, representatives of the Japanese Embassy in Vietnam, and Japanese cybersecurity experts. The two sides were briefed on the project’s progress, discussing ideas and tech solutions.

Information Security Becomes a Global Concern

During the meeting, the two parties agreed to strengthen support for an initiative aimed at raising awareness of information security as well as law enforcement capacities among Vietnamese authorities and other sectors.

According to a press release from MIC, network security is “the most important global problem in the context of digitizing and implementing an e-government that creates a digital economy.”

MIC’s cybersecurity units have been working closely with Japan and sharing their experiences, particularly through this ongoing project.

Vietnam Embraces Bleeding-Edge Technologies

Previously, the two nations discussed collaboration to develop an IT workforce. Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc encouraged support from Japan’s leading universities, institutes, and IT enterprises to develop academic programs that focus on cutting-edge technologies like blockchain, cloud computing, and cybersecurity.

The Prime Minister also raised the topic of setting professional standards for IT human resources in Vietnam, which he said would benefit from Japan’s assistance.

Recently, Vietnam has been in several partnerships with various governments on tech-related initiatives. The Southeast Asian nation is known for embracing emerging technologies such as blockchain to develop its economy and remain competitive with other players in the region.
