IT major Tech Mahindra Ltd. has announced the deployment of a cutting-edge blockchain solution to ward off unwanted spam phone calls for the telecoms sector in India, which affects millions of mobile service subscribers.

This move is aimed at protecting mobile subscribers from what is formally known as Unsolicited Commercial Communication (UCC). According to a report by Cointelegraph, The solution was designed by Tech Mahindra in compliance with the regulations and guidelines of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in order to help telcos keep unauthorized third parties from accessing user data.

According to Rajesh Dhuddu, Tech Mahindra’s Global Practice Leader of Blockchain, TRAI regulations coming into force in late May will affect over 800 million phone subscribers.

The firm’s blockchain-based solution will be able to store the records of any user’s pattern of usage, such as trusted phone numbers they frequently use to communicate. Tech Mahindra said that this solution’s Proof-of-Concept was submitted to TRAI in 2018 in conjunction with Microsoft.

Stressing the capabilities of the technology, Dhuddu said, “Blockchain, with its key features such as Secure Hash Algorithms, Consensus based decision making, immutable transactions and distributed ledgers, serves as a panacea for growing trust deficit not only in G2C services but also in overall business world.”

Tech Mahindra is applying the distributed ledger technology in diverse sectors, including telecoms, manufacturing, hi-tech industries, and financial services.

Cointelegraph reported that Tech Mahindra is also partnering with Samsung SDS the systems integration subsidiary of the South Korean conglomerate to trial blockchain applications on the latter’s Nextledger platform. The deal is an opportunity for Tech Mahindra to secure more market share in India and for Samsung to expand its foray into the international blockchain space.
