Taiwan, South Korea to Collaborate in Developing 5G Technology

May 2, 2019

The Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) is seeking more collaborations with Korean companies in the ICT sector, as South Korea recently launched the world’s first commercial fifth-generation (5G) mobile network.

According to the Korea Times, TAITRA — Taiwan’s key trade and investment promotion agency — stated that it is looking forward to driving technological innovations in many areas.

TAITRA Chairperson James Huang said,

Korea became the world’s first country to commercialize 5G mobile network [in April] and successfully entered the 5G era. Taiwan is also playing a pivotal role in the 5G era as it recently hosted an international conference for standardization of 5G. I expect to see collaborations between Taiwan and Korea not only in 5G but also in other ICT sectors such as artificial intelligence (AI) and internet of things (IoT).

Taiwan is gearing up to host the COMPUTEX tech fair in Taipei from May 28th to June 1st. According to Huang, the tech fair is expected to serve as a platform that allows overseas companies, especially those from South Korea, to be updated on the latest technology, services, and products in the country.

COMPUTEX — one of the largest IT fairs in Asia — will take place at Taipei World Trade Center and Taipei International Convention Center. A representative from TAITRA revealed that this edition of the tech fair will feature cutting-edge technology such as blockchain, innovative startups, games, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), AI, IoT, and 5G applications.

The tech fair is expected to connect organizations in both Taiwan and Korea to expand exchanges and cooperation in the field of ICT.
