South Korea’s Planetarium: All Games Should Have Independent Blockchain

Planetarium, a South Korean blockchain startup game developer, has revealed that it is set to launch a test version of Nine Chronicles, a role-playing game whose data is stored on a blockchain. Unveiling the game, a Planetarium executive also suggested that all games should have an independent blockchain platform.

Open-Source Platform for Blockchain-powered Games

Nine Chronicles is the first game to be developed with Planetarium’s tool, Libplanet, which will be launched as an open-source platform by end-2019. With this tool, game developers can create their own games on a blockchain.

According to Coindesk, Planetarium CEO Kijun Seo said that blockchain game developers are only creating games for existing blockchain platforms. On the contrary, Seo suggested that all games should be operated on an independent ecosystem, implying that there should be a different blockchain platform for every game.

“Decisions about the game are to be determined by the needs of the games, not by the platform,” Seo said. “We should define the game first, not the blockchain underneath it.”

Developing New Games on Blockchain Platforms

Planetarium disclosed that its open-source platform will enable developers to create their own versions of popular games, like League of Legends. According to its CEO, blockchain can offer infinite room for creativity.

“When game companies found out that any secondary creation by users’ modding went against their interests, they blocked the private servers that gamers installed or sued the users for violation of copyrights. I believe that decentralized games built upon our open source platform will be able to open a new era for secondary creations,” Seo said.
