The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), a South Korean agency responsible for military acquisitions, has announced that it will introduce a blockchain project with the goal of enhancing its operations and preventing “illegal alteration” of sensitive defense information in its database, according to Coindesk.

The project will be jointly carried out between three agencies: DAPA, the Defense Agency for Technology and Quality, and the Agency for Defense Development. According to authorities, the pilot project is expected to enhance the credibility of overall defense procurement operations.

As a decentralized ledger technology (DLT), blockchain systems are immutable, meaning they cannot be retroactively changed. Therefore, records of the entire acquisitions process, from the initial bids to the results, will be stored on the ledger for greater transparency compared to traditional methods of recordkeeping.

Moreover, blockchain will allow for greater automation of the bidding process, doing away with the paper documents previously required for proposals.

DAPA added that the blockchain platform will be developed to serve other purposes apart from acquisition, such as unifying the management of firearms transportation permits.

Other government agencies in South Korea have been experimenting with blockchain through various projects. The Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) under the Ministry of ICT revealed that it will double the number of blockchain pilot projects to 12 this year, from six in 2018.

South Korea’s Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries have also implemented blockchain technology to enhance the efficiency of the country’s container shipping industry.
