South Korea’s Ministry of Science and Information Communication Technology has announced that a smart hospital project is being launched in collaboration with the Seoul Medical Center to overhaul the country’s medical services.

Local healthcare-centric news outlet Daily Medi reported that blockchain technology will be utilized to enhance the quality of the public health sector. Specifically, the project hopes to increase the accuracy of patients’ data and shorten processing times at local hospitals. According to a translation of the Korean-language article,

Seoul Medical Center will build an automated, personalized, integrated medical information platform by providing electronic prescription delivery, certificate issuance, and insurance claims through the blockchain-based system.

Dubbed the “Smart Hospital” project, the plan was first introduced to the public in December last year by the Korea Internet and Security Agency, a public organ supervised by the Ministry of Science and ICT. The project reflects strong collaboration between the government and private sectors of South Korea and their commitment to providing the best possible medical services to all.

According to CryptoGround, the blockchain technology will digitize hospital services such as “electronic prescription deliveries, insurance claims, and even certificate issuance.”

In February, the South Korean government debuted the “Seoul Innovation Growth Fund” under which US$1 billion will be poured into the development of blockchain and financial technologies. Since the establishment of the fund, the country has been actively promoting tech innovations, including distributed ledger technology (DLT).

Last year, Myongji Hospital in South Korea struck a deal with a local IT developer to create a digital medical service platform using blockchain.
