Singaporean government agencies have partnered with private educational institutes to offer information and communications technology (ICT) for the average worker in order to address growing demand for professionals in the tech industry.

The Strait Times reported that Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) is now calling on those interested to receive immersive training in skills such as data management and programming, as part of a program to close the gap in the growing tech industry.

Minister of State for Manpower Zaqy Mohamad revealed that with more businesses undergoing a digital transformation, there will be more demand for workers with ICT skills. He revealed that over 2,000 people have already joined the digital and ICT-related courses.

Mohamed also warned that companies trying to remain competitive in the ICT sector may need to retrain their employees and take on new hires who may not possess all the skills needed for the job, but demonstrate an aptitude for further training.

The minister said, “Opportunities in skills development for the workplace given today can help develop one’s potential, no matter your qualifications.”

An example of an institute offering ICT training is the New York-based General Assembly, a private institute that provides courses ranging from data analytics and the Internet of Things (IoT) to web development and digital marketing.

After students complete the 10- to 12-week courses, the General Assembly assists them in finding jobs by providing career-coaching and portfolio-building services, as well as referring the students to hiring events.
