The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), a state-owned organization overseeing Malaysia’s tech sector, has initiated a work visa program targeting tech freelancers to address demand for blockchain-capable talent.

As reported by Cointelegraph, the aim of the program is to attract foreign tech professionals who will be allowed to remain in the country for up to 12 months and provide blockchain-related services or undergo training at a Malaysian firm.

The Number of Visas Will Depend on Plans by Blockchain Firms

Norhizam Abdul Kadir, vice president of MDEC’s growth ecosystem development, said the program will kick off starting with blockchain jobs. He also noted that the number of visas issued will be dependent on the projects planned by domestic blockchain companies.

In the capital, Kuala Lumpur, the NEM Foundation set up the NEM Blockchain Center to serve as an accelerator, incubator, and coworking space. Additionally, the center houses the NEM Blockchain Innovation Lab to conduct research and development for the NEM platform.

Developing Blockchain Technology Permissible Under Sharia Law

In June 2018, Majlis Perundingan Melayu – a Malaysian government advisory committee – signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with South Korean blockchain lab IncuBlock for the development of blockchain technology permissible under Sharia Law.

The two parties are working to develop a platform and decentralized application to meet the social requirements necessary to be deemed halal or “permissible” according to the Sharia Commission.

In September 2018, Hong Kong’s government revealed an initiative seeking to attract experts in distributed ledger technology (DLT) by simplifying its immigration policy. The move signaled the city’s intention to support local development as a “high value-added and diversified economy.”
