Back in September last year, IBM announced new product line ups in their IBM Z series of models that delivered industry first data privacy capabilities with the ability to manage the privacy of customer data across hybrid multi-cloud environments.

These days, clients of all sizes are examining their hybrid IT environments, looking for flexibility, responsiveness and ways to cut the costs to fuel their digital transformation. We decided to catch up with Freddy Lee, CTO at IBM Malaysia for his take on things in this ecosystem.

Asia Blockchain Review (ABR): Our focus today will be about IBM Z and the hyperbole that surrounds it. These days a lot of organizations are navigating hybrid multi-cloud environments. Please explain to our readers the significance of this?

Freddy Lee (FL): Businesses today have reportedly already completed the first 20 percent of their cloud journey. With the growing adoption of hybrid multicloud environments, the challenge of maintaining data security and privacy only grows more acute and challenging.

z15 is uniquely positioned to help companies take this next step in their digital transformation efforts to move mission critical workloads (the other 80 percent) to the cloud by delivering a hyper-secure, agile and continuously available platform. We’re helping clients to do this in three ways:

Encryption Everywhere: IBM Z, a new enterprise platform delivering the ability to manage the privacy of customer data across hybrid multicloud environments.

With IBM Z, clients can manage who gets access to data via policy-based controls, with an industry-first capability to instantly revoke access to data across the hybrid cloud.

The movement of data between partners and third parties is often the root cause of data breaches. In fact, 60 percent of businesses reported they suffered a data breach caused by a vendor or third party in 2018.

Cloud Native Development: As you are aware, cloud is full of new opportunities; it also creates a new reality for IT leaders: a hybrid, multicloud world. IBM Z is the ideal platform for building new cloud-native apps and modernizing existing applications to interface with cloud services through APIs, integrated container services and a new simple cloud pricing approach.

All the latest cloud application development tools, languages and processes are supported in a cloud-native mode on IBM Z, so that life is simplified for your developers. All this means that you can bring new applications to market much faster with the scale, security and resiliency of IBM Z for faster speed to value.

Instant Recovery – An industry-first approach to limiting the cost and impact of planned and unplanned downtime, enabling users to access full system capacity for a period of time to accelerate shutdown and restart of IBM Z services and provide a temporary capacity boost to rapidly recover from lost time.

So, that’s it for our first part of the interview, be sure to check in for our next installment soon!
