Entering the Blockchain Sphere, Vietnam’s Largest Telecomms Company Aims to Become an Industry Leader

December 3, 2018

On Oct 25th, Viettel Group, Vietnam’s largest telecommunications company set its sights and goal to become a leading blockchain technology provider within the next five years, through their development and innovation wing called Viettel Enterprise Solutions Corporation.

The Viettel Enterprise Solutions Corporation was established earlier in October with the mission to provide information and communication technology solutions to the governmental and commercial sectors. These plans include building a digital government.

The company’s deputy general director Ngo Vinh Quy stated that Viettel is eager to keep up with development trends, including blockchain technology at a workshop called “Blockchain at Viettel”. He also said that Viettel Group has enough power to do so, especially with financing, specialists, and a solid network infrastructure to learn, teach, and deploy blockchain.

Blockchain is an unlimited ecosystem. The most difficult task for Viettel is choosing the most effective blockchain technology that can be applied in the daily life.

Viettel Enterprise Solutions Corporation started within the healthcare sector to improve file management. When the model becomes approved, it will connect the entire of medical networks, including the Ministry of Health, provincial health departments, patients, and other related entities on the nationwide level.

Before Viettel Group in Vietnam, a few other Asian countries had already deployed blockchain technology on their telecoms networks. For example KT corporation from South Korea or China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom in China in July.

KT Corporation is no stranger in the global market, as it is the largest company in the telephone market. The decision to invest in Blockchain technology stems from a focus on making commercial networks to be “secure and transparent”. They plan to allow its individual and corporate clients to store and transfer their digital data with “less hacking risks”.

Different to KT, China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom try to keep their leading positions in telecomms operators by launching research groups, which aim to “build a trustworthy blockchain application team to explore the blockchain area”. They are finding way to enrich knowledge in blockchain not only in digital, telecommunication assets, but also as the next generation of telecommunication networks.

Viettel may be not powerful like KT, China Mobile, China Unicom or China Telecom but they are eager to renew themselves. What they may lack in stature they definitely make up for in ambition and a passionate outlook. Their way to conquer the world is just at the beginning, starting with the Vietnamese market.
